When towing is actually needed
Towing is necessary when the car cannot move on its own or when driving would cause greater damage. If the issue is a dead battery, flat tire, or running out of fuel, it's usually resolved on-site, and on-site assistance is generally more affordable than towing. The dispatcher consciously tries to determine if the tow can be avoided — see towing or on-site assistance.
Flatbed or partial lift
| Method of transport | When it's used |
|---|---|
| Flatbed — the car is lifted entirely onto the platform | Four-wheel drive, automatic transmission, low or sports car, chassis damage, accident vehicle, electric car |
| Partial lift — one axle is lifted, the other rolls | Shorter distance, undamaged front- or rear-wheel drive car |
Four-wheel drive cars and many automatic transmission cars must not be towed on their wheels — it damages the powertrain. Electric and hybrid cars also go on a flatbed. That's why the dispatcher always asks for the make, model, and drive axle: a tow truck sent for the wrong type of car means another dispatch.
For heavier equipment, state the weight during the call and the dispatcher will find a suitable carrier.
Where the car is taken
You choose the destination, not the carrier. Three common options:
- Repair shop. If you have your own repair shop, state its name and address. If not, the dispatcher will recommend the nearest open one.
- Home or workplace. Sensible if repairs can wait or if the repair shop is closed.
- Storage lot. If the destination is not yet clear, the car can be stored short-term.
At night, most repair shops are closed. In this case, it's worth taking the car home and deciding in the morning — this is usually cheaper than storage.
What the dispatcher asks
- Location — street and house number or road number and kilometer post. Be sure to mention if the car is in an underground parking garage, courtyard, or a place where a large vehicle cannot fit.
- Vehicle — make, model, drive axle, transmission type, approximate weight. Do the wheels turn and is the steering unlocked.
- What happened and where the car should go — destination address or "I'll decide on site".
Price and what affects it
In Tallinn and Harju County, the published starting prices of 65 € and 75 € apply. Elsewhere in Estonia, three things affect the price: distance to the nearest carrier, vehicle type and type of service. Considering these, the dispatcher will state the price during the call, before dispatch — and it will not change afterward. The full model is detailed on the page towing service price.
