Starter not working — car won't start, but battery is fine
If the interior lights are working normally, but turning the key only produces a click or nothing happens, the problem is likely not the battery. Call +372 5610 1515 and describe exactly what you hear — this single sentence will determine if on-site assistance is sufficient or if towing is needed.

Listen to what your car tells you
| What you hear | Likely cause | Likely solution |
|---|---|---|
| Starter spins slowly, lights dim | Dead battery | Jump start — see dead battery |
| One loud click, then silence. Lights are on | Starter relay or starter motor | Often towing |
| Rapid clicking, engine doesn't turn | Low current or bad connection | Jump start, then check |
| Complete silence, but indicators work | Ignition lock, gearbox sensor, immobilizer | On-site diagnostics |
| Starter spins vigorously, engine doesn't catch | Fuel or ignition, not starter | Depends — see out of fuel |
| Metallic screech or grinding when starting | Starter gear | Tow to workshop |
A single loud click is the most telling sound. This usually means the relay engaged, but the starter did not turn. A jump start won't fix this — the starter needs to be removed in a workshop.
Three things worth trying yourself
- Automatic transmission car: move the lever to P, then N, then back to P and try again. A worn transmission sensor is a surprisingly common cause.
- Manual transmission car: press the clutch pedal all the way down. Some cars won't start if the clutch switch isn't engaged.
- Steering wheel and key: if the steering wheel is locked, move it slightly while turning the key. A locked steering lock prevents starting.
If none of these help, do not repeatedly crank the starter. You will drain the battery and add another fault. Three attempts are enough — then call.
What the dispatcher will ask
- Location — street and house number or road number and kilometer post. Also state whether the car is in a location from which it can be towed away.
- Vehicle — make, model, year, transmission type, and drive axle. These determine if a flatbed is needed for towing.
- What you hear — click, clicking, silence, or cranking. And whether starting has been more difficult in recent weeks.
You will receive an estimated price and arrival time during the call, before departure.
Why this page is not the same as a dead battery
About nine out of ten cars with a dead battery can be started on-site. Not a single car with a starter malfunction can — the starter is a mechanical part that cannot be replaced with roadside assistance. That's why this page more often ends with towing than any other service page, and that's why accurate diagnosis over the phone is important: a wrong call-out means two trips for one breakdown.
If you're unsure which is the case, see towing or on-site assistance.
Price
In Tallinn city center, towing service starts from 65 €, in Harjumaa from 75 €, night and weekend surcharge is 0 €. If the issue is resolved on-site, it is usually cheaper than towing service.
Elsewhere in Estonia, the price depends on the distance to the nearest carrier, vehicle type, and service type — you will receive the exact price during the call, before departure. See service overview.
Frequently asked questions
The car clicks but doesn't start. Will a jump start help?+
Usually not. A single loud click indicates the starter or relay, and that needs a workshop.
How do I know if it's the battery or the starter?+
Look at the lights. If the lights are strong and the starter isn't turning, the battery isn't to blame.
Can I try to push-start the car?+
With an older manual transmission car, it sometimes works. Do not try with an automatic transmission car — it won't work and can cause damage.
How long to wait for a tow truck?+
In Tallinn and Harjumaa, about 15 minutes. Elsewhere, we give an estimate during the call — see how quickly help arrives.
